My kitten is indoors only. Why should I vaccinate for Feline Leukemia?

Indoor cats with no contact with neighborhood cats are not at risk of Feline Leukemia. Cats, not Kittens.

Kittens should all be vaccinated against Feline Leukemia for two reasons.

  • Lifestyle changes - You may intend this to be an indoor cat. Your cat may have other ideas and be an escape artist. Your cat will likely live 15–20 years, and things change with time. You may choose to allow your cat out in the future.
  • This vaccination is far more effective if started as a kitten. If you wait to start Feline Leukemia vaccination until you need it when your cat is 7, it isn’t terribly effective.

The recommendations today are to test and vaccinate every kitten. If your kitten is contentedly staying indoors by 18 months, then we often discontinue this vaccine as unnecessary.
