Are organ transplants possible for dogs and cats?

Yes, but most are not commercially available.

There are several universities and veterinary specialty practices that are performing kidney transplants in cats. One of our clients took his cat… twice. The first didn’t take, although it was not labeled as rejection. Often, the donor cat is from a shelter, and part of the price of the procedure is adopting the donor cat.

Anti-rejection medication and frequent monitoring are needed after a transplant. If you are considering transplants, make sure the required monitoring is available near your home, as veterinary labs may not provide the results quickly enough, and you need a veterinarian that can arrange the testing with a human lab.
