Grain-free diets are a fad, and purely marketing. Your dog is not a wolf, nor do wolves eat grain-free diets in the wild. The first thing they often eat is the intestine of their kill, which is full of grains. Home-cooked diets are rarely formulated by veterinary nutritionists for your dog’s needs (a two-year-old chihuahua or toy poodle has very different needs from a 9-year-old Labrador retriever); those that are properly formulated at significant cost are a lot of cost and effort to prepare at home.
If you want your dog to thrive, feed commercial foods from a company that properly formulates their diets, does their own manufacturing with tight quality controls, and operates feeding centers to monitor how dogs really do on their formulas.
