Recalls happen. That is how the system is designed to work, letting consumers know there is a manufacturing problem.
That said, we have a problem with our pet food manufacturing. With the exception of Hills, Royal Canin, and Purina, all the other pet foods are manufactured by huge contract manufacturing facilities. Because of this, quality controls are sadly lacking. Additionally, the manufacturers rely on prepackaged vitamin/mineral mixes imported from other countries. One foreign source with a contaminant (accidental or deliberate) will affect many brands and formulas. Even therapeutic veterinary diets are affected by ingredient problems on rare occasions.
I don’t know that we have more recalls than in the past. However, we have vastly better information systems to let us know of modern recalls.
