Should my dog or cat eat a gluten-free or grain-free diet?

As for gluten, dogs and cats don’t have celiac disease. Gluten is a great source of protein in commercial diets.

Grain-free diets are now being seen as a huge no-no. Veterinary cardiologists are seeing a large rise in cases of cardiomyopathy in breeds that don’t usually have it. Upon exploration, those dogs are mostly on grain-free diets. There is still uncertainty if the diets lack something by excluding meat, or if the cause is something added in the substitutes (like legumes).

Food allergies are typically allergies to the protein sources, not the grains.

I really hate the commercials for grain-free diets that start out about dogs in the wild…. YOUR DOG IS NOT IN THE WILD. Your dog is not a wolf. Your dog has evolved over tens of thousands of years to be a domestic animal. Besides, the first thing the wolf eats is the rabbit’s intestines… full of grains.
