Do I really have to vaccinate my indoor dog or cat?

DOGS: What dog never goes outside? Even if only in your fenced backyard, raccoons and cats aren’t kept out by a fence. Neither are bats. At least vaccinate against distemper, parvovirus, and rabies.

CATS: Sure, your cat stays indoors. Wouldn’t you feel awful if you were around someone else’s cat and brought an upper respiratory disease home to your cat? I also know of two cases locally where a rabid bat was found inside a home. In the first case, the indoor cats were not vaccinated against rabies, and county officials required euthanasia and rabies testing. In the second instance, the indoor cat was vaccinated, so was allowed to just be quarantined for a period of time.

All other vaccinations depend on lifestyle. Have a serious conversation about exposure risks with your veterinary practice. Disease is real and so are vaccines.
