Should Veterinary Technicians be called Veterinary Nurses?

Veterinary technicians are nurses. They are actually working a much broader scope of nursing than most nurses in human medicine. Calling them technicians gives a mental picture more of an auto technician, who works from a manual for a given car and problem. Not so with veterinary nursing. The model closely parallels human nursing in a small town clinic, working closely with the doctors and supporting them while making sure all the background care is provided for the patient.

However, some states have regulations that make such a title change problematic, trying to protect the job title of “Nurse” and reserve it for those working in human medicine.
