Could you lower your own business’ fees and product prices? Sure you can, but you want to earn a fair wage, and pay your employees a fair wage.
Veterinarians spend close to the same amount of money on their education as a Medical Doctor, yet start out at half the pay after graduation. Many procedures for an animal are invoiced at 10%-20% of the cost in human medicine, yet pet owners expect the veterinary practice to provide the exact same level of care as a human hospital.
Veterinary staff is paid a fraction of what they would earn in human medicine. We regularly hear of dental hygienists earning $37/hour, while the most experienced veterinary technicians are happy to have $25/hour, and many veterinary assistants only earn $16–17. The average licensed veterinary technician averages only 5 years before leaving veterinary medicine - they can earn much more in almost any other job.
Funny that I never hear this question reworded, “Can’t doctors (or dentists) charge less if they want to?” Or plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics, etc.
