Canine Influenza

Canine Influenza ("dog flu") is spreading throughout the US.

Our dogs can be protected! We now carry the vaccine to protect against both known strains of canine influenza seen in the US. Two doses are required initially, 2-4 weeks apart. Protection begins approximately 7-10 days after the second dose. Boost once annually.

Should I vaccinate my dog? Dogs that are around a large number of other dogs... Boarding kennels, doggie day care, groomers, and dog parks. Also dogs belonging to anyone who works/volunteers at such facilities. Influenza can be carried on skin and clothing to other dogs. Basically, the same dogs that need Bordetella ("kennel cough") vaccination should be vaccinated against Influenza.

When should my dog be vaccinated? Puppies over 7 weeks old, and adult dogs. If you have boarding plans, you need to start influenza vaccination a month prior so both doses can be given before exposure.

How does this protect my dog? Like human influenza vaccines, it greatly reduces the severity of symptoms and shortens the duration of illness. A vaccinated dog can still spread flu to other dogs. Unvaccinated dogs may suffer symptoms for up to 10 weeks.

Do I need to see the doctor for this vaccination? If your Dogwood examination is within the past year, and your pet is healthy, this can be done as a nurse appointment.

My dog is coughing. What do I do?
Call us for an appointment. Even vaccinated dogs can still get sick, and there are many causes of coughing.
